What a girl wants

realise that it been so long since i update: found in my hard drive is a story that i have written in secondary or poly but have not post it..... after reading it, did revoke my memory and that i actually can be an author one day.

This is a love story revolving the story of two people who love each other but are not fated to be together. This is life! Welcome to life! Seldom or never we see any couples who are able to live happily ever after. Hence, we have fairy tales. They serve as a form of condolence for all of us, earthlings who still hope that one day, perhaps one day, fairy tales do come true.

There is nothing more exhilarating than a beautiful sunset when the clouds bloom with a suffused saffron, Annabel thought. Smiling to herself, she looked dreamily at Collin, her best friend’s brother. He was only sixteen years old, a year older than her, but he already possessed the charm and body of a real man. Her love for him was a secret, known to no one, especially now that he had a girlfriend whom he adored very much.

Belle, short for Annabel, is definitely not the most fortunate girl. She is abandoned.

Wide awake now, she remembered that she was alone. Her mum did not keep her word. She did not come back. The poor child turned from the window and faced the staring cupboards. She found a piece of bread, the crust is hard, and she slowly munched it. As she aimlessly strolled round the room, her little foot got caught in the playthings which had once occupied her. She tumbled over and fell flatly onto the floor. The piece of bread bounded out of her hand and flew into a pair of pink shoes. Slowly, she raised herself and stared at the scraped knee. Only the sound of a rolling spool of thread was heard. She watched small drops of blood ooze out of the scratched area, and suddenly she bagan to sob. Heart-rending moans that rose from the very depths of the thin little chest. The cries shuddered through the misty-cold air and shook from wall to wall. She sobbed for gentle arms around her, for the sweetness and warmth of a mother.

Shaking her head, Belle jolted herself out of that painful memory. She reminded herself, again, that she should forget about the past and move on.

“Hey! Look at us!” shouted Lola. She was happily splashing water with her brother and his girlfriend. Laughter filled the air. Belle ran towards them and joined in the fun. After that, they proceeded to swim. At the end of the day, all of them were exhausted and sun burnt. Nonetheless, it was a great day for Belle who had not enjoyed herself so much.

“Collin, let’s go home before mum scolds. It’s getting late.” Lola said to her brother.

Collin stole a glance at his girlfriend, Sherry, and then shook his head. “ No, you two go first. We want to enjoy the night breeze. Tell mum I will be home by eleven.”

Lola rolled her eyes and turned to Belle. “These two can never get enough of each other! Oh well, let’s leave them here. I wanna go home and sleep!”

Belle, though reluctant to leave Collin out of her sight, agreed and even teased the lovebirds.

Upon reaching home, Belle wondered what Collin and Sherry were doing. It broke her heart knowing that they would be in each other’s arms. Tears stremed down her cheeks and she brushed them away roughly, hating herself for being such a crybaby. The clock was ticking away and Belle’s eyelids became too heavy for her.

The dark sky gave way to the gleaming sun. Morning arrived. The birds chirped and all was serene. The silence was broken when all of a sudden, Lola charged through the front door causing Belle to gasp in alarm. She scarcely recognized her. Her shorn black hair glistened with sweat and her face was stamped with colour, like she’d run the whole way. As Lola jerked to a halt before her, she saw that the tips of her ears were red, too, a sure sign of something bad.

Goosepimples skittered up her arms like tiny biting insects. She hardly dared to breathe. She hadn’t the slightest idea what might have brought Lola racing to her house early in the morning. She clapped a hand to her heart to still its anxious thumping, asking in a soft, trembulous voice, “Lola, my God, what is it?”

She opened her mouth, then closed it again. Her shoulders were slouched and she looked horrible. After a moment, she straightened and took a step forward. “Hold me, Belle… I feel I’m going to faint…” Belle grabbed her hands and held them tight. “What is it, Lola? What happened?”

“Collin’s dead.” She spoke slowly and in disbelief.

Her words melted on impact like the snowflakes landing with a soft, sizzling sound. Dropping her gaze, Belle suddenly found it hard to draw any breath. Her chest was hitching like an engine that wouldn’t start. “No… not Collin. There must have been some mistake.”

But Lola was shaking her head. “The police called saying that they found his body on the beach. They said there was no sign of Sherry. I haven’t said a word to dad and mum… they will die hearing this… Belle, what should I do? What?” tears, by this time was covering her whole face.

Belle’s mouth moved of its own volition, shaping itself about the unspeakable. “How?” she breathed in a cracked whisper.

“I don’t know…” Lola said with much difficulty amongst her sobs.

Though Belle felt that she was going to die any minute, she knew that Lola was equally devastated like her. And something needed to be done. She could not simply leave Lola alone to face this.

Belle thought for a moment, raking a hand over her head, front to back, as she’d been in the habit of doing since her hair was long. Her face was as ghostly white as the naked lightbulb that dangled overhead. Then, as if coming to a decision, she abruptly wrenched open the door. “There’s only one thing to do. You’ll have to inform your parents. I’ll go with you,” she said.

Lola followed her outside. Her panic receded a bit. She told herself, Belle will be with me when I break this news. They’ll be fine… they’ll…

Belle helped Lola into the cab, then trotted around to the other side.

“Uncle, Bedok.”

Five years passed. Lola’s family were migrated for that long already. Too depressed to face the death of the only son in their family, Lola’s parents decided that they should leave this place of misery to Germany. Belle could vivdly remember Collin’s funeral.

Cries were heard everywhere. Darkness filled the entire place. There was no smiles, no light, no colour. Everyone were solemn and sorrowful. Belle’s heart ached so much so that she felt she could never love anyone again. First was her mother who left her defenceless, facing the world alone. Now is Collin, the only guy she’d ever loved.

Till now, Belle felt the same way. The past seemed to be haunting her now and then. Fortunately for her, Lola had been her companion and her soulmate during all these times. Lola did not emigrate with her parents as she wanted to continue her studies in Singapore and was taken care of by her god brother.

“Come on! You’re my best friend! You got to come to the party with me.” pleaded Lola. For days before the party, she had been begging and convincing Belle to attend a friend’s birthday party at a pub.

Belle, one who had a natural disinclination towards parties, crowds and loud music, grudgingly agreed. She did not want to see Lola’s disappointed face again.

The party venue was, as expected, blazing with loud music. Everyone was wild as if they were on drugs. The atmosphere was lively and happy.

Not tt bad right haha will find time to finish it now really no time.
